Save The Beacon Hill Children's Farm

The Beacon Hill Children's Farm (better known as the Beacon Hill Petting Zoo) was threatened earlier this month with lease changes that could close the facility. This should not be allowed to happen and, it appears, disaster has been averted or, at the very least, it has been brought to Facebook's attention. We all know what happens when Facebook gets involved. Governments quake! They fear the uprising! And private enterprise jumps in to save the day.

I can't believe the reaction I had when I heard this was a very real possibility of closure to one of the most memorable places I can think of in Beacon Hill Park. I wonder what Victoria City Hall has been thinking? Or not, as it seems. I grew up in Victoria and the petting zoo (like the Victoria Bug Zoo) is etched into my memory as one of the non-disappearing type of fixtures.

The park has a lot of memories in it that I am not willing to give up for anything - especially the park. Bunch of crazies over there in that hall of the city.

We Need Kaya Fraser To Come to Vancouver

Kaya Fraser is one of the coolest singer/songwriters I know and I realized she has yet to officially play in Vancouver. Over on Eventful, I have demanded that she come to town - I also expect a bunch of you to head over there and demand that she come to town and play. To prove to you all just how talented she is, check out this quick little video.

Don't Drink and Pilot Out of Space Dock: Star Wars Drunk Driving Ad

I couldn't resist sharing these videos with everyone. I remember the smoking advertisement but I hadn't seen the drunk driving announcement. Enjoy and if you find any more, let me know.

The Post Earth Day Holiday

I understand there is a new holiday for April 23rd. The following video is my endorsement of this new cause - oh, and send me $400 after you watch it. The money is for the cause, of course.

An Early Star Wars Morning

Allyson's sister left for the airport early this morning and before heading to the office I checked out Digg. Of course, there was a very cool video available for us nerds - a video describing the effort put into creating the computer graphics for the Death Star trench in Episode IV. Enjoy the "old" technology.

China & The Olympics

I have been trying to figure out why I am grumpy with the Olympics in China and I was e-mailed this image the other day. What more can I say that the image above doesn't already? Thanks, Stuart Carlson - you said it all.

Raiders: The Adaptation In Vancouver

I got an e-mail from Jason Kurylo a week or so ago in response to my Indiana Jones posts over the last few months. (Sorry, Jason, I haven't had a moment to respond to you directly!) He has pointed out that Raiders: The Adaptation is coming to Park Theatre on May 2nd, 2008.

For those of you who don't know, Raiders: The Adaptation is a fanboy remake of the first Indiana Jones film. I haven't seen it but from what I have read about it over the last year or so is that it is a shot-for-shot fan version of the original Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was filmed over a number of years (started in 1982) and when it was rediscovered by the makers in 2003, it was released to the film festivals. Spielberg even praised the work they put into it considering they were only twelve when they started.

It is an event raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society and I am going to try and check it out. I hope tickets are still available. Anyone interested in tagging along?

About Me

Shane Birley is a blogger, huge geeky nerd, web developer, poet, and creative writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is a partner at Left Right Minds, a web development, arts management, business blogging and on line marketing company.

buy the book, blog your world, feel like a million bucks

Just in case you didn't know, I co-wrote Blogging For Dummies! Before you send me any congratulations, questions, flowers, or blow me any number of kisses  - why don't you go buy ten copies and make me rich and famous.

Or you could just buy a copy since it is a really good book and it has loads of great information for those of you out there who want to jump into blogging because it is fun and exciting.

podcasting

What else do I do? I talk out loud, record it, and post it on line. I chatter about all kinds of things. Some of the things are nerdy, some professional, and some of them are very much NSFW. Why? Because do them for myself and my non-work life. You can be the judge.

events

I do a little traveling here and there for technology conferences and what not. Here are the ones I am going to next or have attended recently.
